Pregnancy Nutrition: What Expectant Mothers Need To Know

By: Corey Palmer

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing. It's just unfortunate that some people see it as a grueling nine-month long ordeal. What you may not realize is that pregnancy can actually be a fun and enjoyable experience. Think of it as nine months of anticipation that will culminate the moment you hear the first cry of your newborn. Each pregnancy can be different, but that's not to say there is no common denominator. Aside from the final product (the baby!), every woman that is carrying a child needs to be aware of pregnancy nutrition. Nutrition is important to expecting mothers because it can spell the difference between a healthy newborn and a sickly child.

There are so many myths and wives tales that have been thrown around when it comes to pregnancy. Superstitious mothers are more likely to believe in them. It's perfectly fine because some of those beliefs (whether true or not) are hinged on culture and religion. As such, it's highly understandable when pregnant women follow them. But when it comes to pregnancy nutrition, expectant moms should be following scientifically-proven practices to make sure that the baby is healthy and strong when it is born. The general belief is that during pregnancy, a woman should eat for two people. While it is understood that the baby inside the womb gets its nutrition from the food that the mother eats, it does not necessarily mean that the mother will eat as much as she can. What needs to be understood here is that it's not in how much food is consumed, it's in the quality of the food that is being given to the baby. With that said, a pregnant woman should make sure that she eats foods that are rich in vitamins and nutrients.

A pregnancy nutrition plan is necessary to ensure that the baby is being nourished with healthy food. Having a well balanced diet may sound too general, but it's really what any doctor would recommend. This kind of diet consists of food that belong from all the food groups. So, if you remember those food groups, you should be eating fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meat, fish, eggs, and food that contains fat and carbohydrates. Striking a balance in the consumption of these foods will guarantee that your baby is being nourished the right way.

Pregnant women needs about 2500 calories per day; 10% of which should be from protein, roughly 35% from fat, and 55% from carbohydates. With this in mind, you can come up with a daily or weekly menu. You are allowed to eat some sweets provided that you eat them in moderation. Aside from the well-balanced meal, it's also necessary to take supplements. The most important vitamin to take during pregnancy is vitamin B, particularly, B9. This is because a pregnant woman needs folic acid, which is important for the creation of the baby's nervous system. If you want to get folic acid from natural sources, you can eat green vegetables, orange juice, peas, lentils, and rice, to name a few.

The health of your baby depends on what the mother eats, hence, it is important to follow a proper pregnancy nutrition plan.
